Uploading video's to VIXY (source guide)
While VIXY supports a wide range of video formats and codecs, there are some recommendations for creating source files. These will ensure that your source file is quickly transcoded to multiple encoding formats (video renditions), while offering the optimal video and audio quality for your end users.
The lists and tables below show you the recommended settings you should use when compressing a video project in software as Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Adobe Premiere, Avid, Compressor and others.
The following video formats and codec are accepted by VIXY:
Media File Formats: Mpeg-4 and QuickTime Formats (MP4, MOV, QT, and M4V), Flash Video (FLV and F4V), Microsoft Windows Formats (AVI, ASF, WMV and WMA), MPEG-1/2 (MPG, M1V, M2V, MP3), WAV, Matroska (MKV), OGG OGM & OGV, WEBM, 3GP, RM, Webex (ARF), MXFVideo Codecs: DivX (Div3/4/5, DX50), DV, H.263, H.264 and AVC, MPEG-4 Visual, MPEG-1/2, MJPG, MP42/3, IV40/50 (Indeo codecs), RV30/40, RMVB, FLV1/4, VP3/5/6/7/8/9, Sorenson (SVQ1/3), Xvid, Theora, WMV1/2/3, VC1, ProRes 422, ICOD, DVCPRO, PXLT, TCSS/TCS2, GoToMeeting Codec (G2M3/4)
Audio Codecs: MP3, MP1/2, AC3, AAC, Vorbis, AMR, PCM, WMA7/8/9, WMSpeech, FLAC, QDM2, RA, Nellymoser, Cook, GSM, SPEEX
Exporting video files in your favourite video editing software - recommended settings
File | Recommended | Avoid |
Compressed Source | H.264, ProRes
Format | MOV, MP4 | |
Bitrate | x1.5/2 of the largest flavor
Frame Size | As big as the largest desired VIXY flavor | Don’t scale or zoom |
Frame Size | Multiples of 16 (see below)
Frame Size | Keep the original | Don’t re-sample files |
Some editing and transcoding software have various export profiles. We recommended exporting using the QuickTime MPEG-4 profile. In the export options choose the following:MP4/MOV Streaming - choose ‘Fast-Start’.
MP4 Video Compression - choose ‘H.264 High profile’.
Bitrate – based on video dimensions. See table below.
Progressive scan mode – avoid interlaced (VIXY can handle interlaced as well, but it’s not recommended).
Multi pass –multi-pass will provide better quality (although VIXY can convert single-pass file as well).
VBR vs. CBR - VBR (variable bitrate) usually provides better quality than CBR (constant bitrate).
Frame Rate – choose ‘Current’.
Recommended bitrate settings
An ideal source bitrate is 8,000-12,000 Kbps. For smaller dimensions you may use lower bitrates as shown in the table below (default VIXY formats dimensions are shown in bold). Please keep in mind that for an optimal encoding result, you should upload files to VIXY with a minimum of x1.5 to x2.0 times the size of the largest desired output flavor.
16:9 | 4:3 | Bitrate Range Source |
1920 x 1080 (1080p) | 6.000 - 8.000 Kbps
1280 x 720 (720p) | 3.750 - 5.000 Kbps
1024 x 720 (iPad) | 3.750 - 5.000 Kbps
640 x 480 (480p) | 2.500 - 4000 Kbps
720 x 405 | ||
640 x 360 | 640 x 480 | 1.350 - 1.800 Kbps |
560 x 315 | 560 x 420 | |
480 x 270 | 480 x 360 | 600 - 800 Kbps |
400 x 225 | 400 x 300 | |
320 x 180 | 320 x 240 | 600 - 800 Kbp |
Please keep in mind that for an optimal encoding result, you should upload files to VIXY with a minimum of x1.5 to x2.0 times the size of the largest desired output flavor.
